Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Looking for quick answers about Vlier and what we can do for you?
We’ve compiled these FAQs to help you get the information you need, fast.

Vlier manufactures precision components for designs that require positioning, indexing, detenting, holding, ejecting and leveling. The product lineup includes spring loaded devices, quick release devices, Vlier lock pins, leveling devices and mechanical components.

Vlier’s product story starts with the Vlier Pin, introduced in 1949 to fixture small parts in tight, compact spaces. That same focus on practical, space-saving precision has expanded into a catalog of more than 3,300 standard parts, plus engineered custom solutions built to match demanding applications.

Vlier supports OEMs and engineers across a wide range of industries, including aerospace, defense, medical, telecom, automotive, industrial, marine, rail, recreational and appliances.

Our components show up in applications ranging from emergency room equipment and airplane cockpit seating to smartphone fixtures and vehicle dashboards.

Vlier maintains internationally recognized quality and environmental management certifications, including AS9100D / ISO 9001, ISO 50001 and ISO 14001.

Vlier has also earned CMMC Level 2 certification, aligning with cybersecurity requirements across the defense industrial base. This achievement signals readiness to handle controlled defense information and support upcoming DoD contract requirements with compliant data practices.

A spring loaded device (SLD) encapsulates a spring within its body and uses a plunger tip or ball to deliver accurate, repeatable end forces for functions like positioning, indexing, locating, ejecting, locking, latching and detents.

A quick release device (QRD) is a precision part comprised of a body, plunger nose, spring and knob, pull ring or lever that retracts the plunger nose for fast repositioning. Common uses include securing, positioning, fastening, latching, locking and quick disconnect.

Leveling devices provide stable support for equipment on uneven floors by offering height control, helping limit tipping, controlling vibration, cutting noise and protecting floors and surfaces.

We offer leveling devices in multiple collections such as the Original Series, High-Value Series, Level Star Series, LMS Anti-Vibration Levelers and VG Series Industrial Glides with stud style or socket style options in many models.

Material and plunger nose style should match corrosion exposure, mating surface hardness and marking risk:

  • Steel – a common choice for strength and wear resistance in general industrial applications
  • Stainless steel – selected when corrosion resistance is critical and for many higher temperature environments
  • Delrin® and nylon options – used when non-marring contact or lower friction is required
  • Phenolic nose – used for specific non-marring needs depending on the device family

Vlier also offers Posi-Hex™ ceramic ball plungers, often selected for applications that need higher temperature tolerance, chemical resistance and extended service life. Ceramic also supports corrosion resistance, electrical insulation and cleanroom compatibility in many environments.

Vlier’s Custom Designs Team supports special modifications to existing parts or completely unique engineered solutions, from prototype designs to production builds and quick-turn deliveries.

Typical customization requests include:

  • Dimensional modifications – length, diameter, thread, mounting features
  • Material and finish changes – stainless steel options, specialty alloys, corrosion protection
  • Performance adjustments – travel, end force, retention, engagement style
  • Application requirements – temperature specific needs, clean room requirements, high-strength material, space applications
  • Documentation packages – dimensional test reports, performance test reports, full material and process certifications, first article inspection
